Common Feng Shui Beliefs for a Harmonious Home
We’re not Feng Shui experts—but over the years, we’ve picked up a lot from clients, colleagues, and conversations during home tours. Whether you fully believe in Feng Shui or just enjoy the idea of creating better energy at home, these are some of the most common beliefs people still ask about today.
Think of this as Feng Shui 101, homeowner edition.
1. The Front Door Is the “Mouth of Chi”
In Feng Shui, the front door is where energy—called Chi—enters the home. A welcoming, well-maintained entrance is believed to attract prosperity and positive opportunities.
That’s why bold door colors, especially red, are often associated with good luck, protection, and success.
2. Declutter to Let Energy Flow
Clutter is believed to block the natural flow of energy. A tidy space allows Chi to move freely, which can help promote calm, focus, and harmony.
Even if you don’t follow Feng Shui, most of us can agree: less clutter usually means less stress.
3. The “Command Position” Matters
Key furniture—like your bed, desk, or stove—should be placed so you can see the door without being directly in line with it. This setup is said to create a sense of security, control, and balance.
It’s all about feeling grounded and aware in your space.
4. Mirrors Reflect Energy
Mirrors are powerful in Feng Shui because they reflect and multiply energy. For example, placing a mirror where it reflects a dining table is believed to double abundance.
However, mirrors facing the bed are often avoided, as they’re thought to cause restlessness or disrupted sleep.
5. Plants Bring Life and Growth
Healthy green plants symbolize vitality, growth, and positive energy. Popular choices include lucky bamboo and jade plants.
Dead or spiky plants, on the other hand, are believed to disrupt harmony—so keep it fresh and thriving.
6. Water Symbolizes Wealth
Water features like fountains or aquariums are commonly linked to financial prosperity. One important belief: water should flow toward the home, not away from it, to symbolize wealth coming in rather than leaving.
7. The Power of Color
Colors play a big role in Feng Shui, each carrying its own energy:
-
Red: Strength, passion, protection
-
Green: Growth, health, renewal
-
Gold / Yellow: Wealth and stability
-
Blue: Peace and wisdom
Choosing the right colors can subtly shift how a space feels.
8. Bedroom Feng Shui for Better Sleep
For better rest, Feng Shui suggests avoiding placing your bed directly under a window or in line with the door. Soft lighting, balanced layouts, and calming, earthy tones help promote relaxation and deeper sleep.
9. Avoid Sharp Corners or “Poison Arrows”
Sharp edges from furniture or architectural features can create what’s known as Sha Chi—harsh energy. Softening these areas with plants, curtains, or rounded furniture can help restore balance.
10. Keep the Stove in Good Condition
In Feng Shui, the stove represents nourishment and wealth. Keeping it clean and functional—and using all burners regularly—is believed to invite abundance and balance into the home.
Whether you follow Feng Shui closely or just enjoy the ideas behind it, many of these beliefs are really about intention—creating a home that feels balanced, welcoming, and peaceful.
Have you heard of any Feng Shui beliefs we didn’t mention? We’d love to hear them.
